Dragon Boat Festival activities to enjoy

China's traditional Dragon Boat Festival takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month and falls on June 7 this year. There's more than one way to celebrate the festival, but people in southern China commonly mark this day with dragon boat races. Silk Road Post gathers information of fun activities from across the province to help you fully enjoy the festival.

Dragon boat museum (顺德龙舟汇)


Looking like a giant dragon flying on a green lake, the Dragon Boat Museum in Foshan city serves as a display platform for dragon boat culture. It was designed by Tsinghua University professor Li Xiaodong, who won a number of prestigious national and international architectural design awards.




Covering about 900 square meters, the museum is a three-story building with exhibition areas and a small library. Visitors can attend dragon boat theme salons, listen to dragon boat rap music, try on dragon boat racing uniforms, and design model dragon boats.

Dragon boat exhibition hall (车陂龙舟文化展览馆)





The exhibition hall in Chebei village covers an area of 1,300 square meters. This is the first exhibition hall in Guangzhou devoted to the inheritance and conservation of dragon boat culture. Visitors can take a close look at a 15-meter-long, well decorated boat displayed in the hall. They also can admire all kinds of exhibits donated by villagers and dragon boat lovers, such as models of ancient sailboats and dragon boats, ink and wash paintings, tools for making dragon boats, oars, flags, costumes, and genealogies.

Dragon boat races




From June 6 to 9, a range of events will be held at Haizhu Wetland Park to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. Various teams from home and abroad will be paddling on the lake inside the park, alongside a variety of colorful parades. Visitors can join classes to board on dragon boats, watch single person boat races around the lake, and see folk-custom displays.




Also, the International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament will again be held on the section of the Pearl River between the North Gate of Sun Yat-sen University and the Guangzhou Bridge. This is a popular event that can thrill all who attend.
